Visit West Sumatera, KNKS Encourages Halal Tourism Development

Represented by the Director of Islamic Economic Development and Halal Industry, Afdhal Aliasar, and the Principle Analyst of Islamic Economic Development and Halal Industry, Yopi Nursali, the National Islamic Finance Committee (KNKS) met the Governor of West Sumatera, Nasrul Abit discussed the West Sumatra halal tourism at the Governor’s office on Friday, May 24th2019. The meeting was also attended by the Mayor of PadangCity, Mahyeldi Ansharullah. The visit was carried out in the context of delivering KNKS initiatives to make West Sumatera the first area of Islamic economic development program, especially halal tourism sector in Indonesia.

Afdhal explained that by the legalization of the Government Regulation on Halal Product Assurance (PP JPH), the local government is expected to response it quickly. West Sumatra has great potential for the development of halal industry although many improvement on their tourism management is still needed.

Afdhal further revealed that according to the Law, Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Produk Halal (BPJPH) is a government institution that responsible to carrying out the halal certification process in Indonesia. However, the fact that BPJPH has not yet operationally cover all areas across Indonesia, has triggered KNKS to encourage strong collaborations between BPJPH and LPPOM MUI and the local government. 

"Later, LPPOM MUI as the largest Halal Inspection Agency (LPH) needs to be supported by other LPHs. It’s becoming our expectation to the presence of other LPHs on all areas across Indonesia can be realized and functioned optimally as soon as possible. One of which is through the involvement of universities. Universities and community organizations can establish a Halal Center to become a companion for MSMEs to get halal certification”, said Afdhal.
